Donating at Hope Mission

by Bradley Velsink June 14, 2017

Today I had the opportunity of meeting some of the amazing staff at Hope Mission in downtown Edmonton. Specifically, a man named Robin. He is in charge of all donations that come in the door at Hope Mission. Upon meeting Robin he filled us in on how they help the community.

Hope Mission is a shelter that provides meals, sleeping arrangements, and many other services including addiction recovery, spiritual care, critical care, and kid plus youth outreach.

Before heading to Hope Mission I knew that they fed and took care of plenty of people every day but I would never have thought that they gave out up to 1000 meals on a daily basis. I am still amazed at how many meals the staff and volunteers prepare every single day. Even though that may seem like a high number, Edmonton has around 1700 homeless people. If you do the math that is roughly 1 in every 588 people that live in Edmonton. Most of us have at least 588 friends on facebook. Imagine that one of your friends was now living on the streets.

That got me wondering about how many pairs of underwear and socks they must go through and if they are able to keep up with the demand. I asked Robin to see the underwear bin and sure enough, it only had a few pairs in it. The underwear they had was composed of very large sizes and they were all cheap tighty whities. Unfortunately, when people think of donating, underwear often gets forgotten about and when it doesn't, it is often the cheapest underwear that can be found. Today we were able to donate a large amount of underwear in some of the most needed sizes thanks to everyone who supports us!

While walking through the Shelter, Robin stopped to say hi to a person he recognized. After their conversation, Robin told me that the individual he was talking to used to be homeless and come to Hope Mission for food, shelter and addiction recovery. Because of the help from Hope Mission and the amazing staff/volunteers that person was able to get over his addiction, get himself off of the streets and get a great job! Being able to see first hand an individual who went through the struggles of being homeless to now being off the street and having a job was truly humbling.

Shelters like Hope Mission help change lives daily and do amazing things for those who are less fortunate. It's amazing to see first-hand the positive impacts that Hope Mission has on so many people. Without the donations from generous people like yourselves, those amazing life changes would not be possible.

From us at SOCKnSACK and the staff/volunteers at Hope Mission, we can't thank you enough!
